Healthwatch Bucks Annual Report on Dignity in Care Homes
Healthwatch Bucks Annual Report on Dignity in Care 2017
Healthwatch Bucks have just completed the 3rd year of a project, commissioned by Buckinghamshire County Council, visiting care homes to look at Dignity in Care. We have now visited over 50 care homes. Visiting local adult care homes every two weeks, on average, gives a unique insight into the great work being done as well as some of the challenges faced by those looking after some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
The annual report which details the last 24 care home visits from April 2016 - March 2017 can be found at https://www.healthwatchbucks.co.uk/2017/05/dignity-care-annual-report/ and key findings include:
· Care homes are increasingly positively in their responses to recommendations as they understand more about the project – making some real changes at the front end to support their residents to leave meaningful and fulfilling lives;
· Other organisations, such as Buckinghamshire County Council, have looked again at what support can be given to those working in care homes. For example, over the last year because of the reports, they have added a Person-Centred Activities Workshop and a study day on Sight Loss Awareness to their Quality in Care training directory.
· Healthwatch have also delivered “value add” activities such as the publication of good practice reports – one on meaningful activities and one on the use of cues (visual and other) in care homes – as well as run a workshop/networking event for care home managers on meaningful activities.
· Healthwatch have been told by members of the public that they have used our reports when looking for care homes for their loved ones. There have also been over 2000 page views of our reports since April 2015.
